Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) entered IPL 2025 as the defending champions but failed to replicate their past success. Their campaign went off track as they finished eighth on the table with 12 points from 14 matches.

Despite having several star players in the squad, many of them could not perform to expectations. As a result, some names could be released ahead of the 2026 season in the upcoming mini-auction, reportedly scheduled to take place in Abu Dhabi in mid-December 2025.

Here are three players KKR might release before the mini-auction

1. Venkatesh Iyer

KKR made headlines when they spent a massive ₹23.75 crore to sign Venkatesh Iyer, making him one of the most expensive players of the season. Expectations were naturally high, and he was also appointed as the team’s vice-captain. However, his performance did not justify the investment.

In seven innings, Iyer scored only 142 runs, with just one half-century. Surprisingly, across 11 matches, he did not bowl a single delivery. To add to his woes, he picked up a hand injury late in the tournament, which kept him out of action for a few games.

Given his poor form and high price tag, KKR may release Iyer before the 2026 season. Doing so would free up a significant amount in their purse, allowing them to bring in an experienced and consistent performer who can strengthen the team’s balance.

2. Moeen Ali

England’s seasoned spin-bowling all-rounder Moeen Ali might also find himself on the release list ahead of IPL 2026. In 2025, he had a tough time with the bat, managing just five runs in two innings. With the ball, he picked up six wickets in five matches but could not make a major impact overall.

Considering KKR’s need for a more reliable all-round option, the team might look for another overseas player who can contribute effectively with both bat and ball. A change in this department could help improve the team’s overall depth and balance.

3. Anrich Nortje

The South African pacer came in with high expectations after KKR decided not to retain Australia’s Mitchell Starc, who had played a key role in their 2024 title win. Nortje was expected to fill that gap, but fitness issues once again hampered his season.

He played only two matches, taking just one wicket while conceding 83 runs in seven overs at an economy rate of 11.85. Given his limited availability and lack of rhythm, KKR might choose to release him and target a fit, experienced pacer who can consistently perform at the top level.
