The IPL 2026 season could bring some big leadership changes. Several franchises might reconsider their captaincy choices after underwhelming performances last season.

Here are the 3 Teams that might change their captains in the IPL 2026

1. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)

KKR won the IPL 2024 title under Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy, but things changed drastically the following year. In 2025, they attempted to defend their title without Iyer, choosing not to retain him and instead bringing in veteran Ajinkya Rahane as captain.

However, Rahane failed to make an impact, as KKR finished eighth on the table with 12 points from 14 games (5 wins, 7 losses, 2 no results) and a net run rate of -0.305. Ahead of the 2026 season, the three-time champions are unlikely to retain Rahane and are expected to look for a proven, long-term captaincy option to help them bounce back into contention.

2. Rajasthan Royals (RR)

RR are also expected to undergo a captaincy change before IPL 2026. Reports suggest that current skipper Sanju Samson has already conveyed his decision not to continue with the franchise, as he wants to be available for the auction or a potential trade.

With Samson likely to move on, RR will be in search of a new leader. Names like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Dhruv Jurel are currently leading the discussion, while Riyan Parag is also considered an option. After finishing ninth last season with just eight points in 14 games (4 wins, 10 losses) and a net run rate of -0.549, the Royals will be eager for a fresh start under new leadership.

3. Delhi Capitals (DC)

Delhi Capitals had a mixed 2025 season. They started well, playing some high-quality cricket, but lost momentum in the second half of the tournament. Eventually, DC missed the playoffs, finishing fifth with 15 points from 14 games (7 wins, 6 losses, 1 no result) and a net run rate of +0.011.

Axar Patel, who was retained and made captain for that season, did reasonably well, but if DC wants to adopt a more aggressive approach, they could consider a change at the top. Removing Axar after just one season might seem harsh, but someone like KL Rahul, with greater leadership experience, could be a realistic option heading into IPL 2026.
