Former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan has revealed that while the Indian dashing opening batter Abhishek Sharma’s strength lies in his aggressive batting approach, it also makes him highly predictable for the opposition.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, the former all-rounder has reckoned that it’s time for Abhishek Sharma to begin picking and choosing his aggressive moments before the opposition bowlers understand his weaknesses. Sharma will be next seen in the T20I series against South Africa at home, starting on Tuesday, December 9, in Odisha.
“Abhishek plays fearless cricket, which is very good. But he needs to be selective. If he steps out aggressively on every ball, bowlers will plan for it. Especially bowlers with variations in the powerplay have already troubled him. He has to pick his bowlers and moments wisely. The aggression is fine, but it must have a strategy behind it,” Irfan Pathan said on his YouTube channel.
It’s worth noting that Pathan’s comments align with the remarks made by the Australian ace pacer Josh Hazlewood, who was also part of the T20I series before being released for the ongoing Sheffield Shield games.
“That is just how it usually goes. Players arrive and do well early. Then bowlers study them, find patterns, and test them. The great players are the ones who fight through that phase, expand their game, and come out stronger to dominate for years,” Josh Hazlewood said after the second T20I.
Abhishek Sharma accumulated 163 runs in the five-match T20I series against Australia Down Under at an average of 40.75, leading the run-scoring charts and emerging as the player of the series.
Delving into the details of Sharma’s T20I record, he has amassed 1012 runs from 29 T20Is at an average of 37.48 and a strike rate of 189.51 with two centuries and six half-centuries.
