It is great to know that I overtook MS Dhoni, but it won’t be long before he overtakes me: Dinesh Karthik

Former Indian cricketer and commentator Dinesh Karthik was surprised to know that he overtook MS Dhoni in the list of batters with the most runs in T20 cricket. Notably, Dinesh Karthik recently represented Paarl Royals in the SA20 2025 competition, scoring 144 runs in 11 matches.

During the tournament, Karthik went past MS Dhoni’s run tally in T20s. While MS Dhoni has scored 7432 runs from 391 T20s, Karthik went past the former Indian skipper with 7537 runs from 412 games.

During a media interaction on Sunday, February 16, Karthik asserted that he is not someone who is behind records. He is also confident that Dhoni will go past him in the upcoming IPL 2025 season.

"I played a lot of my cricket wanting to play for India. And when I retired from the IPL and playing in India six months ago... I think that was most important - trying to play for the country and doing well. I have never been someone who has been fascinated by records, probably because I don't have great records. I don't know," Dinesh Karthik said as quoted by India Today.

"It's great to know that I overtook Dhoni, but it won't be long before he overtakes me. It really wouldn't trouble me much. I am happy for him to keep that record as the highest run-scorer as a wicketkeeper - I don't even know what exactly it is. It's okay, it's nice to know, but it's not something that I crave or really want," he added.

It’s worth noting that Dinesh Karthik will be a part of the RCB set-up as their mentor and batting coach in IPL 2025. He recently announced his retirement from Indian cricket and IPL after a long 20-year career.
