In the T20 World Cup 2026 Super 8 stage match against the West Indies, team India's standout pacer Jasprit Bumrah cited Shivam Dube's twin boundaries in the final overs of the frantic run chase as a crucial turning point. The squad ended a record-breaking run chase at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Sunday, March 1, thanks to the all-rounder's useful cameo of eight runs off four deliveries.
After Hardik Pandya was dismissed at the end of the match, Shivam Dube entered the crease. India still required 17 runs from 10 deliveries at that point. With a boundary off the first delivery and another off the last ball of the 19th over, the southpaw reduced the stress.
Sanju Samson finished the last over with four balls remaining, allowing India to win with just seven runs thanks to the boundaries. Although it was the shortest of cameos, Jasprit Bumrah appreciated the significance of Dube's effort and pointed out that few would draw attention to it.
"You know, obviously, the two fours that Dube hit, it is in the cricketing books and stats, nobody will really appreciate that, but the people who really know cricket, the two fours really didn't set the pressure on us because sometimes 8-9 runs in the last over, it can get tricky sometimes," Bumrah told ICC after the match.
Jasprit Bumrah also played a key role in the proceedings as he finished with bowling figures of 2-36 off his four overs, including the prized wicket of Shimron Hetmyer.
"The wicket was holding up so we wanted to use our variation, we did not want to bowl too fast because that was an easy option. Hit our back of length, use our change of pace, so we wanted to make run scoring as difficult as possible, and today was a good day where I got some wickets," he said.
Bumrah also praised Sanju Samson for his 97* with 12 fours and 3 sixes. He stated that the batter produced a masterclass as he never let the required run rate get out of control.
"Unreal. I'm really happy for him because, you know in the recent last month he's had a little bit of an up and down journey. To keep a good mindset, sometimes being in and out, it can be difficult for you as a cricketer. You want stability, you can sometimes question yourself, but come this day with the conviction that he had, he was absolutely clear, really, really, happy for him, top knock. Hopefully, he continues to do this and goes from strength to strength," Jasprit Bumrah said.
India will clash with England in second semi-final in Mumbai on March 5.
