Former India batter Karun Nair feels he wasn’t thinking about his place in the Champions Trophy 2025 squad. Notably, Nair had an exceptional Vijay Hazare Trophy, India’s premier domestic tournament, averaging 389.5 in the 2024-25 season.
The former Karnataka batter and current Vidarbha star top-order batter last played a Test match for India way back in 2017. However, he remains hopeful of getting back into the Indian Test squad after being overlooked for Champions Trophy 2025.
"If I'm being honest, before the tournament, I wasn't thinking about that. At least for me, it felt quite far away. But like I said, you have dreams, you have thoughts, you want to achieve things. But you're not thinking, 'I'm going to make it.' You think, 'I want to make it.' But whether it will actually happen is always a question mark in your head," Karun Nair told Sports Today.
It’s worth noting that the Indian chief selection Ajit Agarkar stated that Karun Nair’s name was discussed while selecting the CT 2025 squad. However, he couldn’t make it to the final squad as a lot of players were competing for multiple spots.
Karun Nair hopeful of making it to India’s Test squad
Interestingly, Karun Nair had scored 779 runs from eight innings at an average of 389.50 in the recently concluded VHT 2024-25 season. He racked up these runs with five centuries and a fifty. Nevertheless, Nair’s long-term goal is to make it to the Indian Test team again.
"I still have the dream of playing Test cricket for India. I've said it in many interviews. So quite honestly, that was the only thing on my mind. I wasn't even thinking that I'd be mentioned or considered for the Champions Trophy squad, so I feel really grateful for that," Nair added.
