An interesting incident involving commentators Matthew Hayden, Kevin Pietersen, and South African seamer Kagiso Rabada occurred after South Africa defeated Australia by five wickets in the World Test Championship 2025 Final at the Lord’s in London on Saturday, June 14.
During the post-WTC 2025 Final coverage on the Star Sports, the former England captain Kevin Pietersen and former Australian opener Matthew Hayden were previewing India’s upcoming tour of England.
At the same moment, Hayden exited the frame to drag Rabada into it, leading to an awkward moment on air. Pietersen quickly changed the India vs England topic to discuss about Rabada and South Africa’s performance at that point.
"Why don't we leave the India-England series because right now we have an absolute legend with us in Kagiso Rabada," Pietersen said, after Hayden dragged Rabada into the picture.
On the other hand, Aiden Markram, the South African opener, played an innings of his life in the fourth innings, smacking 136 runs off 206 balls with 14 fours to put his team in the driver’s seat. Pietersen hailed the former South African skipper for showing exceptional grit.
"Probably the best innings any South African batter has ever played in Test match cricket. It might not go down as the most attacking or entertaining if you look back at South Africa's Test history - but when you factor in the expectation, the stage, and the pressure after failing in the first innings, it was extraordinary,” Pietersen stated.
As South Africa required 282 runs to win the WTC final, Markram received exceptional support from Temba Bavuma, who scored 66 runs in 134 balls with five fours. Later, David Bedingham (21*) and Kyle Verreynne (4*) took their side over the line with five wickets in hand.
