Former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has opened up on an incident between Virat Kohli and Akash Deep from the recently concluded Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. Speaking at AWS AI Conclave in Bengaluru, Ashwin stated that Kohli’s advice didn’t help the pacer and his good spell turned awry.
The recently retired cricketer Ashwin has detailed an instance from the India vs Australia Test series at Gabba in Brisbane. Just when Akash Deep was going through an exceptional spell, Kohli came up to him with a piece of advice, which didn’t go well for the seamer as his rhythm went off.
“In the recently concluded Test series. Akash Deep was bowling a fabulous spell at The Gabba. He was probably bowling the best at The Gabba, Jassi (Jasprit Bumrah) wasn’t. He was going through a wonderful spell of 3-4 overs,” Ashwin told at AWS AI Conclave in Bengaluru.
“I was watching the game from outside. No offence. I saw Virat (Kohli) run up to him and said ‘Seedha daalo yaar (bowl straight buddy)’ and immeditely out came a fielder and he went to leg gully. Akash Deep bowled on the body and a couple of balls down the leg side, got flicked, got pulled, and his rhythm went awry,” he added.
Ashwin also opened up on what exactly Virat Kohli’s mind was going through during this complete incident.
"In Virat’s head, he thought that was uncomfortable for him, so if you do that against Smith, you will get him out. If you don’t understand a bowler, this is what happens. But if you understand a bowler, you know he’s going through a good spell, allow him to build on that spell," he concluded.
Akash Deep was part of two games in the recent Test series against Australia. In Gabba, he scalped three wickets, while he picked up two wickets at the MCG in Melbourne.
