Former Sri Lankan batter and commentator Kumar Sangakkara has opened up on the Indian opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal’s seven-ball duck in the fourth innings of the ongoing Lord’s Test in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.
Jaiswal, who could score only 13 runs in the first innings of the ongoing Test, couldn’t create a significant impact in the second innings as he returned to the pavilion without disturbing the scorecard. Interestingly, in both innings, he lost his wicket to his IPL teammate Jofra Archer.
"Watching Jaiswal in the first over that he faced, he didn't look comfortable, he didn't look watchable. He has spent a long time at short leg for India, and he has come out looking a bit jaded,” Sangakkara said on air on Sky Sports Cricket.
Later, India’s No.3 batter Karun Nair, who made a comeback after a gap of eight years, also unevenly lost his wicket, getting out LBW off Brydon Carse, who bowled a nip-backer to trap him before the stumps. Former England cricketer Michael Atherton wasn’t impressed with the way Nair got dismissed.
"It was a very strange departure from Nair, particularly the end he is batting at. From the Pavilion End, you know the ball is naturally going to run back in at you down the slope. To make matters worse, he will have a big bruise in the morning as it hit him on the inside of the pad,” Atherton told Sky Sports Cricket.
Two overs later, things worsened for India as Shubman Gill, the Indian skipper, also joined the queue to the pavilion, losing his wicket to Carse, who trapped him LBW for six runs off nine balls. Later, India had to opt for nightwatchman Akash Deep.
Unfortunately, Akash also lost his wicket in the last over of the day's play as Ben Stokes cleaned him up to put his side on top at stumps on Day 4 as India were reeling down at 58/4 with 135 more runs required on Day 5.
