Former Australian dashing opener and commentator Matthew Hayden has opened up on how the Indian team can win the upcoming Test series against England, scheduled to start on June 20 at Headingley, Leeds.
Notably, the upcoming five-match Test series is part of the new World Test Championship 2025-27 (WTC) cycle. While India has a younger side this time around, without the likes of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, Hayden feels India has an edge over England.
Moving forward to the details, Hayden feels the England bowling attack is marred with injuries and a number of retirees. As a result, Hayden asserted that Indian batters should take that as an advantage in the five-match series.
While Mark Wood has been ruled out of at least three Tests due to a knee injury, Jofra Archer will also miss the opening Test due to a thumb injury, with Gus Atkinson continuing to recover from a hamstring strain.
"I don't think England bowlers are that good, they have got a number of injuries and a number of retirees as well, that will be the challenge. The northern Test matches when it's zipping around that will be key, win that one and it could well be a series that goes India's way," Hayden said on 'JioHotstar'.
With a lot of injuries sustained by the pace attack, England had Eddie Jack invited to their net sessions. The 19-year-old young pacer from Hampshire caught the attention of the ECB selection committee after he dismissed KL Rahul in the second unofficial Test between India A and England Lions.
India’s squad for the England series:
Shubman Gill (C), Rishabh Pant (VC & WK), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Nitish Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel (WK), Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd. Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav.
