Former England cricketer Michael Atherton and former Indian head coach Ravi Shastri were involved in a funny conversation on the opening day of the fifth and final Test at the Oval in London as Shubhman Gill lost his fifth consecutive toss on the England tour.
While Gill lost his fifth consecutive toss as a captain, it was the country’s 15th consecutive toss to lose, turning the 1/32678 odds true. While the stand-in captain Ollie Pope tossed the coin, Gill called it wrong with England opting to bowl first in the fifth Test.
India’s misfortune at tosses includes two T20Is, eight ODIs, and five Tests, involving different captains. On that note, Atherton tried to take a dig at Shastri for being part of the majority of India’s tosses.
"You are doing these tosses, you are responsible too. You will get sacked," Michael Atherton told Shastri during commentary.
"When the coin landed, he (Gill) did not look up," Shastri said.
"Don't mind losing the toss as long as we win the game. I was a bit confused yesterday about what to do. It was a bit overcast, but the wicket looks good; we'll look to post good runs in the first innings. It should be a good pitch for the bowlers. We've got three changes. Jurel, Karun and Prasidh in for Pant, Shardul and Bumrah. We look for a win every game we play, we've come close, and it's about that 5-10 per cent extra push, boys will be giving it their all,” Gill said at the toss.
Shifting our focus to the details of the fifth and final Test at the Oval in London, India made four crucial changes to their playing XI. While the keeper-batter Dhruv Jurel replaced the injured Rishabh Pant, pacer Prasidh Krishna has replaced rested Jasprit Bumrah.
Additionally, Akash Deep is back for the fifth Test, replacing Anshul Kamboj, who had a poor debut in the Manchester Test. Also, Karun Nair replaced Shardul Thakur
