Mohammad Amir is refusing to back down. The former Pakistani pacer has now doubled down on his confident prediction that India will not go to the T20 World Cup 2026 semifinals, a prediction that turned out to be incorrect the instant Sanju Samson destroyed the West Indies at Eden Gardens. He claims that even though India is in the final four, they will not compete in the championship game.
In what was essentially a quarterfinal, India defeated the West Indies by five wickets to secure their semifinal ticket. They wrote their greatest run chase in T20 World Cup history, chasing 196, thanks to Samson's undefeated 97. India overcame some anxious times, although the Caribbean unit had their moments. That’s why Amir isn’t convinced yet.
Jason Holder and Rovman Powell's late surge helped the West Indies record 195/4. With a return of 2/36, Bumrah was once again India's best bowler. Samson ended the chase undefeated, something he had never done in 29 prior T20 run-chases in IPL and international cricket. The chase started off shakily at 41/2.
Virat Kohli's undefeated 82s in 2016 and 2022 have been surpassed by his 97*, which is now the best score by an Indian in a successful T20 World Cup chase. Additionally, India achieved a record-tying sixth semifinal berth and the highest-ever T20 World Cup chase.
“India complete cricket nahi khel rha”- Mohammad Amir says India will not play T20 World Cup final
After losing to South Africa, Amir was certain that India would not make it to the semifinals, but the Suryakumar Yadav-led team advanced to the competition's Final 4 thanks to consecutive victories against Zimbabwe and the West Indies.
Amir offered a new prediction about India's prospects in the T20 World Cup during his appearance on the Pakistani television program Haarna Mana Hai.
Speaking after India’s qualification, Amir said: “India complete cricket nahi khel rha. India final nahi kehelega [India are not playing complete cricket. India will not play the final.”
"If I analyse it from a cricketing point of view, India are not playing good cricket. Check their fielding. They have dropped at least 3-4 catches and fumbled on the field. Every bowler, except for (Jasprit) Bumrah has gone for runs. I told you that (Hardik) Pandya never performs against big teams. He went for 40 runs in his 4 overs. West Indies also went after Varun Chakravarthy and the teams in the semifinals play well against spinners. I believe that India are still not hot favorites in the tournament," Amir said.
India will play England on March 5 in the second semi-final of the tournament in Mumbai.
