Mohsin Naqvi, the head of Pakistan's cricket board, sparked another controversy just hours before the country's T20 World Cup match against India on February 15 by citing field marshal Asim Munir and saying that neither he nor his government were scared by what he called "threats" from India and the ICC.
After weeks of drama, boycott threats, and back-and-forth negotiations between the Pakistan government, the ICC, and other cricket boards, the Pakistan Cricket Board ultimately agreed to play the match on Monday.
Analysts believe that Naqvi, who is also Pakistan's interior minister, is attempting to use a cricket issue as a means of sending a civil-military signal by bringing up the military leadership.
During the impasse, Pakistan remained resolute and unfazed by pressure, Naqvi remarked during a press conference on February 15.
“Neither am I intimidated by the threats from India and the ICC, nor is the Government of Pakistan, and as for Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, you already know about him, he never gets afraid,” Naqvi said.

One of the most notable military leaders in Pakistan's recent history is Field Marshal Asim Munir. General Munir was elevated to Field Marshal, the nation's highest military rank and only the second in history after Ayub Khan, by the Islamabad cabinet in May 2025, in the wake of fierce border clashes with India following Operation Sindoor, which involved India's strikes against terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
The PCB eventually changed its mind despite the first tough stance and boycott threats. The government of Pakistan ordered the national team to play India as planned in Colombo on February 15 after consulting with several stakeholders, including cricket boards from Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and the United Arab Emirates, under the leadership of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
