In Indian cricket, MS Dhoni's leadership legacy is unrivalled, and supporters frequently speculate that the former captain would eventually rejoin the national team in a different capacity—that of head coach. Many see him as an obvious candidate because of his strategic thinking and composed manner. However, the duties of coaching internationally and Dhoni's ongoing IPL obligations have raised questions about the viability of such a transfer.
Chopra believed that after spending so many years in a demanding cricketing atmosphere, Dhoni—and most players, for that matter—would not want to be involved in the thick of things again. Aakash Chopra stated unequivocally on his YouTube channel that he does not envision Dhoni taking over as India's head coach. The former opener drew attention to the demanding schedule and frequent travel.
Aakash Chopra Breaks Silence:
He said, "That is a big one. I don't think he is interested. Coaching is a difficult job. Coaching keeps you as busy as you were when playing, and sometimes even more than that. You have a family, and you say that you have done the same thing your entire life, you have lived your life out of a suitcase, and you don't want to do that job now. That is why a lot of players don't get into coaching, and even if they do, it's a two-month IPL stint. However, if you become a full-time Indian head coach, it's a commitment of 10 months a year. I don't know whether Dhoni would have that much time. I will be amazed if he has that much time."
Dhoni's focus is still squarely on the Chennai Super Kings for the time being. Under his temporary leadership, the five-time champions had a dismal IPL 2025 season, placing last in the standings. After struggling without Ruturaj Gaikwad, Dhoni acknowledged that the team needs reinforcements going forward. In July, the seasoned custodian turned forty-four. Although he admitted that CSK had fallen short of expectations during the previous two years, he pledged to make amends at the next auction.
