After the conclusion of the IPL 2025 season for the Chennai Super Kings, the stand-in captain MS Dhoni revealed that the top-order batter Ruturaj Gaikwad will take over the captaincy from the IPL 2026 season.
Notably, Gaikwad was ruled out of the IPL 2025 season mid-way after injuring his elbow. Later, MS Dhoni took over the captaincy duties of the franchise for the second half of the season. Interestingly, CSK finished at the bottom spot in the standings for the first time in the league’s history.
It’s important to note that CSK ended their campaign with an 83-run win over the table toppers, Gujarat Titans, on Sunday, May 25, at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
"Yes there are a few holes that we'd like to fill but one of the most important things was when Rutu comes back next season at least we are able to give him a team where he just needs to fit in 1 in the playing XI. He doesn't have to worry about too many things," Dhoni said at the post-match presentation.
Moving into the details of the game against the Titans, CSK batted first after winning the toss. Top-order batters Ayush Mhatre (43) and Urvil Patel (37) continued their good form while overseas opener Devon Conway smacked 52 runs in 35 balls.
In the middle and death overs, new overseas recruit Dewald Brevis smashed 57 runs in 23 balls with four fours and five sixes, while he received decent support from Ravindra Jadeja. Eventually, CSK posted a daunting total of 230/5 in 20 overs.
In the chase, the Gujarat Titans got bundled out for 147 runs in 18.3 overs. Sai Sudharsan (41) was the top scorer with six fours from 28 balls. Noor Ahmad and Anshul Kamboj scalped three wickets apiece.
