At Optus Stadium in Perth, debutant Harshit Rana left after hitting seven runs off five deliveries in the opening Test match against Australia. He made an immediate impression when he came close to hitting a boundary on the inaugural first ball hour in Test cricket. However, Rana and Nitish Kumar Reddy sprinted three and the outfield was too slow for the ball to reach the fence. After that, he nicked one to the slips after hitting a boundary in his fourth delivery.

McSweeney and Marnus Labuschagne joined forces and demonstrated their rapid reflexes in a spectacular slip-catching attempt. Harshit Rana, making his debut, was attempting to score some vital runs in the 47th over of the Indian innings by flinging his bat around. Josh Hazlewood, however, got the ball to leave the lower-order batter at the last second and hit him with a pearler.

Harshit Rana gets dismissed:

In an attempt to catch the ball, debutant McSweeney dove to his left as the thick edge sailed towards the second slip. However, the ball hit the top of McSweeney's thumb and headed towards Marnus Labuschagne, who was stationed at the second slip. Labuschagne, in a split second, understood that the ball was going his way and took a wonderful one-handed catch.

While Virat Kohli was dismissed for just five runs, openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Devdutt Padikkal failed to open their score, while Indian hitters struggled in the middle in Perth. When KL Rahul scored 26 before being controversially dismissed, he appeared to be in fine form.

After a mediocre effort from their seasoned hitters, including Virat Kohli, India was bowled out for 150 earlier in the day. On the hot Perth field, Josh Hazlewood took four wickets. India gave their bowlers a target to work with thanks to the helpful contributions of Nitish Reddy (41) and Rishabh Pant (37) in particular.
