The reigning champions' weak Champions Trophy 2025 start disappointed Pakistani pace sensation Naseem Shah, who emphasized the necessity for them to correct their errors before traveling to Dubai for Sunday's thrilling match against bitter foe India.
It took over thirty years for a world event to return to Pakistan. However, in the tournament's opening match in Karachi, New Zealand crushed the co-hosts, ruining their celebration. Each team competes in three group-stage matches in this short competition, and losing the first one has put their prospects of making it to the semi-finals in jeopardy.
The 60-run loss has significantly increased the significance of Pakistan's high-stakes match against India in the semi-finals compared to when the competition began.
Before facing the ultimate challenge in Dubai on Sunday, Naseem acknowledged that Pakistan must make amends for its previous errors.
"When you don't start well, it's natural to feel disappointed. There are quite a few things we need to fix before the next important match. We have to correct our mistakes and focus on the next game," Naseem told reporters, as quoted from Geo News.
We need to fix things in the death overs: Naseem Shah after Pakistan conceded 113 runs to New Zealand
For Pakistan, the last ten overs of the first inning were a deja vu moment, and Glenn Phillips was the main reason for their despair. As Pakistan scored 113 runs in the final 60 balls, Phillips' lightning-fast 61 lit up Karachi's sky with fireworks.
"The last six to eight overs didn't go the way we wanted them to. We need to look at how we can improve in those areas in the next matches,” Naseem added.
It is considerably harder for bowlers to control the scoring rate when Karachi's dry strip remains true to its nature and provides a heavenly surface for the batters.
"On pitches like these, bowlers don't get much help. Big scores are very much likely here," Naseem said.
While they have won only one match against India in ODI World Cups and T20 World Cups combined, Pakistan has a 3-2 favorable lead against Men in Blue in Champions Trophy. This included the 180-run win in the final of the 2017 edition in England, which handed Pakistan their maiden Champions Trophy title.
