Due to the weather gods interrupting the first ODI, the women's ODI series between Sri Lanka and New Zealand did not get off to a good start. It appears that the Kiwi team's injury problems have not yet been resolved, and the second ODI is scheduled for Friday, March 7.

Lauren Down, the top batsman for New Zealand, will not play in the two ODIs against Sri Lanka that are still scheduled. This is because she still hasn't fully recovered from the back injury she suffered on the morning of the first ODI in Napier. Bella James was replaced by Down, but she was also disqualified because of a strain in her right leg.

Injury Forces Lauren Down Out:

Consequently, Down has been replaced by Izzy Sharp, an uncapped batsman and wicketkeeper. Interestingly, the young player who previously only played in the T20I series will now be going to Nelson to play the final two ODIs. Izzy Sharp will be joining the ODI team in Nelson, however she was only picked for the T20I series. Hannah Rowe, who will be absent from the game, will be replaced by Emma Black.

Ben Sawyer, the head coach of the New Zealand Women, also voiced his disappointment over Down's exclusion from the series against Sri Lanka Women. But he also highlighted the benefits of some young players being given the opportunity to play for their country, saying that Sharp will undoubtedly be welcomed by his team and that it is a terrific opportunity for her.

ESPNCricinfo quotes New Zealand head coach Ben Sawyer, “We’re all really disappointed for Lauren to be ruled out of the series. “Unfortunately, injuries are part of the game and we wish her a speedy recovery. It does provide an exciting opportunity for Izzy to join the group in Nelson for these last two matches and we’re looking forward to welcoming her.”
