Former Pakistan spinner and cricket analyst Saeed Ajmal has come up with a startling revelation, recalling an incident after Pakistan’s T20 World Cup win in 2009 against Sri Lanka in the grand finale.
Notably, Pakistan defeated Sri Lanka in the second edition of the ICC T20 World Cup in 2009 by five wickets to lift the silverware at the famous Lord’s Cricket Ground. In an interaction with Ahmed Ali Butt on his YouTube channel, Ajmal made an interesting statement.
The former spinner claimed that the T20 World Cup-winning squad received a cheque for INR 25 lakh each from the then Prime Minister, Yusuf Raza Gilani, but they never received the money, as the cheque bounced later when they tried to cash it.
"When we returned home after winning the T20 World Cup in 2009, we did not get that much money. Because, we had a tour of Sri Lanka to follow. The then Prime Minister invited us and gave a cheque of Rs 25 lakh to each player. We were happy it was a lot of money back then. However, the cheque bounced," Ajmal told Ahmed Ali Butt on his YouTube channel.
"I was shocked that even a government cheque could bounce. We were told the PCB chief would handle it, but he refused, saying it was the government's promise. In the end, the only money we got was from the ICC," he added.
On the other hand, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) decided to reward the Indian team and the support staff with INR 21 Crore after their Asia Cup 2025 win over Pakistan in the grand finale, on Sunday, September 28, in Dubai.
Notably, India, led by Suryakumar Yadav, defeated Pakistan thrice in as many games in the recently concluded eight-team showpiece event.
