Australian Test captain Pat Cummins went on to become the eighth Australian bowler to scalp 300 Test wickets after scalping a six-wicket haul against South Africa on Day 2 of the ongoing World Test Championship 2025 Final at Lord’s in London on Thursday, June 12.
Notably, for the first time in Test cricket history, the Australian bowling attack is having three players with 300 or more wickets with Pat Cummins joining the list alongside Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon. Importantly, Josh Hazlewood is sitting on 280.
“It's great, got some family here as well, which is nice. Came out after lunch with them looking good and bowled well. Pretty happy to have a decent lead at the moment. It's way more than I could have asked for, for any fast bowler 300 is a big number, niggles, injuries and played for a long time, so pretty happy. When the ball is soft, it's easier to bat but it still feels like the odd ball is nipping, feel we bowled well,” Pat Cummins said on Day 2.
After making his debut in 2011, Cummins missed six years of Test cricket due to fitness issues. However, since returning in 2017, he barely missed a Test, giving utmost priority to his fitness in the longest format of the game.
"I've had a really good run the last half a dozen years or so of not missing too many games, For the first few years, I didn't know where my second Test was coming, so I still feel like I've got lots of miles in the legs,” he told after the day’s play.
"Back in the day, 300 [wickets] felt like you're close to the end. [Mitchell Starc], he's almost [at] 400. So hopefully I don't feel like I'm going to end any time soon. The medical staff, I really need to thank, the way they looked after me in the early years and continually to get through a Test match, the way they manage the fast bowlers, a lot of that is a nod to them as well."
Speaking about the WTC Final, Australia are leading by 218 runs in the third innings with still two wickets in hand.
