Punjab Kings (PBKS) had a disappointing IPL 2024, finishing ninth on the table with just 10 points from 14 games (five wins, nine losses). In response, they made drastic changes, retaining only two players from their previous squad and adding 23 new names in the mega-auction.
Now, with a completely revamped 25-member squad, PBKS will look to end their title drought in the upcoming IPL 2025 season. The franchise made headlines by securing last season’s IPL title-winning captain, Shreyas Iyer, for a staggering INR 26.75 crore. Iyer, who led the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to glory in 2024, will now spearhead a new era for PBKS.
The team will kick off their campaign on March 25 in Ahmedabad against the Gujarat Titans (GT). PBKS will have a split home schedule, with matches in New Chandigarh and three games in Dharamsala towards the end of the season. With Ricky Ponting taking over as head coach, expectations are high.
Ponting and Iyer previously worked together at Delhi Capitals (DC), guiding them to the IPL 2020 final. Now, PBKS fans hope this combination can deliver a more dominant and consistent campaign. Alongside Iyer, key players like Marcus Stoinis, Glenn Maxwell, Azmatullah Omarzai, Marco Jansen, Arshdeep Singh, and Yuzvendra Chahal will play crucial roles.
It is a homecoming for the Aussie all-rounder, Maxwell as he used to play previously for this franchise. Chahal will also look to prove himself at the IPL stage once again, as he has done over the years.
Iyer, in particular, comes into this season on the back of strong performances in domestic cricket and India’s Champions Trophy-winning campaign in Dubai. PBKS fans will be eager to pack the stadiums, dreaming of a title-winning run that could finally bring glory to their franchise.
