Former Indian spinner slams Babar Azam for his selfish approach vs New Zealand

Former Indian cricketer and commentator Murali Kartik has slammed Babar Azam for his slow approach during the 321-run chase against New Zealand in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 opener in Karachi.

After New Zealand were tasked to bat first, they posted a dominating total of 320/5 in 50 overs, thanks to Will Young and Tom Latham’s centuries. In the chase, Pakistan could score only 22 runs in the 10-over first powerplay.

Interestingly, Babar Azam, who came in as an opener, brought up his 35th ODI fifty in the 31st over off 81 balls, raising eyebrows. His slow approach caught the spotlight of many and Murali Kartik had slammed the former Pakistan skipper for his unbelievable approach in the chase.

"Yes, you were up against it, 320-run target. Yes, you were up against a very disciplined and a very spirited New Zealand team. But then, when you are hosting and representing your country out there, I still am trying to get my head around some of the innings played by some of the senior batters. Seriously, it was just unbelievable," Kartik said on Cribuzz.

"I can tell you as a bowler that if you are not going to put any pressure on me, happy days for me. I can roll my ten overs, and just walk away. Even somebody as good as Mitch Santner was put under pressure by the lower order. If you are not going to put any pressure on the opposition and play for yourself, and play for your own runs, I am really sorry, I think that is very very disappointing," he added.

As a result, Pakistan eventually got bundled for 260 runs in 47.2 overs, losing the contest by 60 runs. They will next take on India on Sunday, February 23, and Bangladesh on Thursday, February 27.
