RCB are definitely the title favorites this season: Sunil Gavaskar

Former Indian batter and commentator Sunil Gavaskar has heaped praise on the cricket that Royal Challengers Bengaluru are playing in the ongoing season. Though he felt Mumbai Indians are also playing well, they have some big games coming up before the playoffs.

In an exclusive conversation with India Today, Gavaskar is of the opinion that RCB is a strong favorite to lift their maiden IPL title this season. He asserted that RCB has batted well and fielded superbly so far in the campaign. 

“Royal Challengers Bengaluru. They’ve batted well and fielded superbly too. Mumbai Indians are close, but they’ve only just started their surge. The question is whether they can maintain it, as they have three tough matches coming up against top teams. How they carry that momentum will be key. But yes, RCB are definitely the title favourites,” Gavaskar told India Today.

For the unversed, RCB is currently holding the third rank in the standings with seven wins and three losses, amassing 14 points at an NRR of 0.521. RCB would need only one win in their next four matches to make it to the playoffs.

Most importantly, RCB is also a strong favorite to finish in the top two and make it to the qualifier, and increase their chances of lifting the silverware this season. Led by Rajat Patidar, Royal Challengers Bengaluru have ticked almost all boxes away from home.

However, their major concern is their home record. Having played four games at home this season, RCB suffered three losses. Nevertheless, they bagged a thrilling win over the Rajasthan Royals in their most recent home game.

RCB will next play against the Chennai Super Kings at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Saturday, May 3. Later, they will take on the Lucknow Super Giants, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders on May 9, May 13 and May 17 respectively.
