RCB captains in IPL over the years from 2008 to 2025 (Updated List)

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) is one of the most celebrated franchises in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Even though they haven’t won the trophy even once in 18 years, their fan following is extremely massive, more or less due to Virat Kohli.

Over the course of 18 years, seven players led RCB in the IPL history. Rahul Dravid was their first-ever skipper in 2008 winning only four and losing 10 matches. Kevin Pietersen was their next skipper leading the team in 2009. But he remained the captain only in six matches and lost four among them. 

Legendary Anil Kumble was then handed over the leadership duties and he won 19 out of 35 matches as captain of RCB. The franchise lost 16 matches under his leadership but Kumble was their most successful leader in IPL then.

Daniel Vettori took over the responsibility from Kumble but couldn’t change the franchise's fortunes. In the two editions that he led the team, RCB won 15 and lost 13 matches. Virat Kohli led RCB for the first time in 2011 but took over officially and in a full-time capacity in 2013. 

Kohli used to lead from the front as RCB captain and almost won them the trophy in 2016 singlehandedly only to lose to Sunrisers Hyderabad, led by David Warner, in the final. This was the closest Kohli and RCB got to winning the IPL; since then, they have been striving hard.

Overall, Kohli led RCB in 143 matches, winning 66 and losing 70, while four matches ended in a draw. Shane Watson also stepped in to lead RCB in 2017 in three matches but could win only one game.

South African cricketer Faf du Plessis was the captain of RCB in the last three editions, but even he couldn’t lead the franchise to the elusive title. Faf won and lost 21 matches each during his captaincy tenure.
