Former Australian captain and commentator Ricky Ponting has opened up on a fake quote that has been surrounding social media right after India’s seven-wicket dominant win over Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2025 campaign on Sunday, September 14, in Dubai.

Interestingly, the Indian players decided not to shake hands with the Pakistani players right after India’s comfortable win. Notably, Indian players and support staff closed their dressing room after the victory, while Pakistani players waited for the customary handshake near India’s dugout.

After this controversial incident, a fake quote involving Ponting went viral on X (Formerly Twitter), in which Ponting was falsely quoted as saying this match will be remembered forever with India as the big loser for not deciding to shake their hands with the opposition team.

“This match will be remembered forever with India as the big loser. The way the Pakistani team wanted to shake hands at the end has immortalised them as champions of the gentleman’s game with India as the perpetual loser," the fake comment read (via 7 News).

Breaking his silence on the fake quote, Ponting was quick to take to this X platform to reveal that he didn’t make those statements and indeed has made no public comment about the Asia Cup 2025 campaign so far.

"I am aware of certain comments being attributed to me on social media. Please know that I categorically did not make those statements and indeed have made no public comment about the Asia Cup at all," Ponting posted on social media.

After the seven-wicket dominant win, India topped the Group A points table with two consecutive wins over the UAE and Pakistan in the group stage. They will next lock horns with Oman on Friday, September 19.
