Former Australian captain and commentator Ricky Ponting has opened up on the Indian opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal’s time-wasting tactics towards the dying moments of the opening session on Day 3 of the fifth Test at the Oval in London on Saturday, August 2.
Jaiswal, who shone with an exceptional century on the third day of the ongoing Test, started hobbling at the non-striker’s end while pointing towards his hamstring, which didn’t go down well with Ponting.
Jaiswal’s ‘time-wasting’ tactics meant that it was the final over before Lunch on Day 3. Interestingly, Jaiswal managed to walk down, seemingly fine, to the pavilion as umpires called for Lunch.
Ponting asserted that after the controversial Lord’s Test, Jaiswal shouldn’t have opted for a similar tactic, especially with lunch around the corner. Interestingly, England's fielders, including Ben Duckett, gave away some words to Jaiswal for his antics.
"I didn't like what I saw there with wasting time in that last over. Especially at the back of what happened at Lord's when India complained about what the English batters did," Ricky Ponting said as quoted by Sky Sports Cricket.
For the unversed, Indian fielders, including the captain Shubman Gill, were involved in a verbal spat with the English openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett on the third day of the Lord’s Test for their time-wasting tactics.
Gill caught the limelight for using a few abusive words at Crawley, who called the physio after getting injured while facing Bumrah on the last over of the day. With seven minutes left, the Indian team wanted to bowl at least two overs before the end of the play.
However, Crawley’s antics meant that India could bowl only one over before the stumps. Eventually, India lost that particular game by 22 runs in a narrow defeat.
