On Friday, February 27, the Indian middle-order batter Rinku Singh’s father, Khanchand Singh, passed away after a prolonged battle with stage-four cancer after undergoing treatment at the Yatharth Hospital in Greater Noida.
Notably, Rinku, who is currently part of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 campaign with the Indian team, travelled to visit his father ahead of the match against Zimbabwe when he was on ventilator support.
However, Rinku returned in time for the Super8 clash against Zimbabwe, but he wasn’t part of the playing XI as keeper-batter Sanju Samson replaced him. However, he was seen on the field as a substitute fielder.
Dr. Sunil Kumar, spokesperson of Yatharth Hospital, said Khanchand Singh was battling liver cancer and was admitted to the hospital on Saturday, February 21, and breathed his last this early morning.
"His condition had deteriorated significantly in recent days, following which he had been admitted to the hospital on February 21. He was placed on ventilator support and breathed his last early this morning," Kumar said.
On the other hand, the former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh sent his heartfelt condolences to Rinku and his family during this tough phase.
“Pained to learn about the demise of Shri Khanchand Singh Ji, father of Rinku Singh. This must be an especially difficult time for Rinku and his family, even as he remains committed to his responsibilities during the T20 World Cup. My heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with him and his loved ones. May Waheguru grant eternal peace to the departed soul and give strength and courage to the bereaved family,” Harbhajan Singh posted on X.

Team India will next travel to Kolkata for their final Super 8 encounter against the West Indies. The match will be a virtual quarterfinal with the winner advancing to the semifinals. India is still occupying the third rank in the Super8 Group 1 table with a negative net run rate.
