In addition to declining a second central contract, former New Zealand captain Kane Williamson has decided not to play for his country in the upcoming Test match against Zimbabwe, scheduled to begin on July 30. Rob Walter, the recently hired coach of New Zealand, remains optimistic about Kane Williamson rejoining the national team, nonetheless.

Despite choosing not to participate in the next tour of Zimbabwe and turning down a central contract for the 2025 season, famous batter and former captain Kane Williamson has reaffirmed that he is still keen to play international cricket, according to New Zealand head coach Rob Walter.

Last year, Williamson agreed to a casual deal with New Zealand Cricket (NZC), which would enable him to play in franchise T20 leagues worldwide and make important appearances for the Black Caps. For the second consecutive year, he declined a full-time contract last month. Additionally, he chose not to participate in the two-match Test tour of Zimbabwe that New Zealand will be embarking on later this month.

But according to Walter, he spoke with Williamson for a long time about his future intentions for his international career. Williamson will soon rejoin the New Zealand team, according to the 49-year-old, who recently took over as head coach from Gary Stead.

Talking to the New Zealand Herald, Walter said, "Myself and Kane have had a nice conversation, a long conversation. It was really great to catch up with him and discuss cricket. It was great to get his view on New Zealand cricket and the Black Caps. He's been so influential in their success over the years. But then also to discuss what the future might look like. I've said it repeatedly, he's still very committed to the Black Caps and wants to play international cricket. I don't think it'll be too long until we see that."

Williamson participated in nine of the Kiwis' thirteen Test matches in 2024, scoring 1013 runs at an incredible average of 59.58. Earlier this year, he participated in the Champions Trophy, where he scored a game-winning century against South Africa and amassed 200 runs from five innings at an average of 40. Williamson, who will be leading London Spirit in the forthcoming Hundred in England, chose not to participate in the Zimbabwe tour. The three-match T20I series against Australia in October might mark the 34-year-old's comeback to international cricket.
