Former Indian keeper-batter and analyst Robin Uthappa has opined on the Indian T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav making it to the Indian squad for the T20 World Cup 2026 despite not being amongst the runs of late in the shortest format of the game.
Speaking exclusively on his YouTube channel, the former cricketer took the example of former Indian skipper MS Dhoni playing the World Cup despite not being in good form, adding that SKY isn’t out of form, but is out of runs instead.
"I remember that Dhoni wasn't in the best of form. If I'm not wrong, I don't think he got more than one or two fifties in the entire World Cup, and the final was one of those. He was not in very good form. It's happened before, where teams have carried important players who were not in good form because of what they can potentially do; they're match-winners,” Robin Uthappa said on his YouTube channel.
Moreover, Uthappa also stressed the Indian skipper’s batting technique changes in the recently concluded South Africa series, which India won by 3-1. While SKY made a few technique changes in the first T20I, he was back to his old technique later in the series.
"I don't think SKY is out of form. People who haven't played cricket at a certain level will not understand when we're saying he's not out of form, he's out of runs. Ollie Pope is out of form, Shubman Gill looks out of form. In this series, I've watched SKY bat in the nets. Boy, he was hitting shots in the fog. He was hitting full-length balls over third man for six. Like what he did in the IPL, he was doing that, off the front foot. You can't do that if you're not in form,” he added.
"One thing I did notice about his batting when he came in to bat in the first T20I, his technique has changed. The way he sets himself up has changed. It felt weird, and by the third game, he came back to his old technique,” he concluded.
