Rohit Sharma begins preparation for Australia ODIs, trains with Abhishek Nayar

Team India’s ODI captain, Rohit Sharma, has given a key update, confirming that he has started preparing for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia, scheduled from 19 to 25 October 2025.

Rohit posted a picture of himself in the gym with former India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar. Nayar reposted the image with the caption: “Let it begin.”

A few days ago, Virat Kohli also shared an update with an image from a practice session. Both veteran batters have now started their preparations for the Australia series. They are currently available only for ODIs for India.

After leading India to the ICC 2024 T20 World Cup title, both Rohit and Kohli retired from T20Is. Just before the announcement of the squad for the recent England tour, they shocked fans again by announcing their retirement from Test cricket. However, recently, during the fifth and final Test at the Oval, Rohit was seen attending the match.

Earlier this year, both were key members of the squad that won the ICC Champions Trophy. They are expected to continue playing until the 2027 ODI World Cup, aiming to finish on a high. In the 2023 ODI World Cup in India, Kohli shone with the bat and Rohit impressed as captain. However, they suffered a heartbreaking loss to Australia in the final.

BCCI to have honest discussion with Rohit and Kohli about their ODI future  - Reports

Recently, there have been reports of uncertainty about their availability until the 2027 World Cup. A close source to the BCCI reportedly said the board will have an honest discussion with both players about plans.

Abhishek Nayar was removed from his position as India’s assistant coach after a poor Test series in Australia. However, he remains a respected batting coach and has worked with Rohit in the past. Before the recent England tour, KL Rahul also trained with Nayar, which proved effective as Rahul scored 532 runs in five matches.

Initially, both Rohit and Kohli were set to return in the Bangladesh series. However, the series was postponed, delaying their comeback in the India jersey. They will now be seen in action against Australia in October.
