Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar claimed that Rohit Sharma's future as a Test cricketer was not in his own hands. Rohit had a woeful Border Gavaskar Trophy where he scored just 31 runs in five innings and was rested in the fifth and final Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Speaking in an interview Rohit Sharma claimed that he had not retired from playing for India in Tests and had only opted out owing to his poor form for the team. He also claimed that he had the power to decide his future.

However, Sanjay Manjrekar disagreed with that had felt that it was someone else's job to decide a player's future.

"One thing that a lot of players say is that ‘I will decide my future’. I have a problem with that. You can decide your future with regards to retirement, but somebody else has got the job to decide your future as a player and captain,” Sanjay Manjrekar told Star Sports.

The chairman of selectors has the power to decide the future: Sanjay Manjrekar

Sanjay Manjrekar claimed that it was the duty of the chairman of selectors to take a call on a player's future. He felt that Ajit Agarkar had a crucial role to play in deciding whether Rohit Sharma would be playing any further role in the Indian team as a Test player.

“That’s the chairman of selectors. You have got to respect the hierarchy, however big you are. If the chairman of selectors is strong and he believes in the long-term health of Indian cricket, he has the power to decide whether your career should end now, or you get a few more matches, or one more series. Retirement is in your hands, but playing for India is not,” Manjrekar added.
