Rohit Sharma did not do justice to his talent as a Test batter: Pravin Amre

The evening of May 7 surprised the cricket fans across the Indian nation as the ace Indian batter and skipper, Rohit Sharma, announced his retirement from the red-ball game. In his own out-of-fashion manner, he just added a picture to his Instagram story and bid adieu to his test career.

Former Indian cricketer and Mumbai’s Coach, Pravin Amre, believes that he did not do justice to the talent possessed as a test batter. His comments came after the Mumbai batter announced his retirement on May 7.

While talking to TOI, he said, “Fantastic defensive game and an in-born game-sense that every Mumbai batter usually has. He had that confidence. He used to play a lot of shots and get caught in the outfield initially. Maybe that is why the early consistency was lacking. But once he figured out his game, he became consistent. But I still feel he did not do justice to his talent as a Test batter.”

The 38-year-old cricketer debuted for India in tests back in 2013 with back-to-back centuries and garnering tons of attention. However, inconsistent chances and performances not up to the mark of the stature he held did not help. Revivification of his test career came in 2019, similar to his white ball game, when he started to open the innings for Team India.

He was India’s leading run-scorer in two successive WTC cycles and was clearly India’s best Test batter between 2019 and 2022. He was even one among the best, and only two other batters scored more centuries than him, but they were not openers either.

He made another interesting record as he smashed a total of 12 centuries in his test career, but all of them came in winning causes, maintaining a 100% track record and reflecting on his impact, not just on his team but the opposition as well. He is also third in the list for players with the highest percentage of runs in a career in wins, with 69.40% of his career runs coming in wins, only behind Adam Gilchrist and Matthew Hayden.
