Indian cricket team head coach Gautam Gambhir hailed Rohit Sharma for putting the team first. Notably, Team India went into the SCG Test against Australia without Rohit as Jasprit Bumrah took over the captaincy with Shubman Gill replacing the batter.
Attending the press conference after India lost the SCG Test by six wickets and the series by 1-3, Gambhir credited Rohit Sharma for taking a dashing step. However, India didn’t benefit from that decision.
“It could have been more sensible when the reports were written. When a captain takes such a call I don't think it's bad. I think everyone has to keep the team first and Rohit did that,” Gambhir told reporters after the New Year Test.
Gautam Gambhir stresses on importance of domestic cricket
Furthermore, Gambhir also talked about the importance of domestic cricket. He added that everyone in the current squad should take part in domestic cricket before making it to the Indian team.
“I would always like everyone to play domestic cricket. Not one if they are available and have commitments to play red ball cricket everyone should. If you don't, you'll never get desired results,” he added.
Also, speaking about Jasprit Bumrah’s unavailability to bowl in the fourth innings, Gambhir stated that the team shouldn’t be dependent on one player to get the desired result.
“I don't want to say because Jasprit wasn't there we lost. We had our moments. Yes we didn't get the results, we lost the series. Team cannot be dependent on one player,” Gambhir stated.
Before concluding the press conference, Gambhir also talked about Bumrah and Sam Konstas incident, which caught the spotlight on Day 1 of the SCG Test.
“He (Sam) had no business being involved with Bumrah when Usman was batting..tough sport that is what it is,” Gambhir told the media.
