Rohit Sharma likely to lead India in 2027 ODI World Cup as ICC poster sparks buzz

A recent ICC poster of Team India featuring Rohit Sharma has sparked speculation among fans that he is the most likely to remain captain of the ODI side. The poster is related to India’s tour of England in 2026, when the Men in Blue will play five T20Is and three ODIs from July 1 to July 19.

Alongside England’s new white-ball captain, Harry Brook, Rohit Sharma has been featured — a move that many fans see as a hint that he could lead the ODI team into the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Rohit led Team India to Champions Trophy 2025 glory, after which there was speculation that he might also retire from ODIs. However, the skipper publicly expressed his desire to continue playing the format and leading the side.

Rohit Sharma announced his test retirement just before the recent England vs India Test series

The veteran batter has already retired from the other two formats. After captaining India to victory in the 2024 T20 World Cup, Rohit stepped away from the shortest format. Then, just before India’s recent tour of England for the five-match Test series, he made the surprise decision to retire from red-ball cricket. As a result, Shubman Gill took over as Test captain.

Recent reports have questioned whether both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will continue in ODIs until the 2027 ODI World Cup. A source, speaking to PTI, said the board is preparing for an honest conversation with both players regarding their future.

"Yes, it will be discussed soon. We still have more than two years for the next World Cup (November 2027). Both Kohli and Rohit will be pushing 40 by then, so there has to be a clear plan ahead for the big event as our last win was in 2011. We also need to try out a few youngsters in time," the source said.

Both Rohit and Kohli are now available only for ODIs after retiring from the other two formats. They are expected to be in action against Australia during the upcoming three-match ODI series, scheduled from October 19 to 25 in Australia.
