Rohit Sharma to miss Mumbai’s next Ranji Trophy

India’s Test and ODI skipper Rohit Sharma’s Ranji Trophy comeback could last for just one match. He played against Jammu and Kashmir in the previous round but is set to miss the final group-stage clash against Meghalaya. The match is set to get underway on January 30.

Notably, not only Rohit, but other Indian stars like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shreyas Iyer, and Rishabh Pant are unlikely to feature in the next round of the Ranji Trophy. The main reason for the same is team India is scheduled to play a three-match ODI series against England starting on February 6 followed by the ICC Champions Trophy. All of these four players are part of the ODI squad for both assignments.

The final round of Ranji Trophy will end on February 2 while the first ODI against England is scheduled on February 6 at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Nagpur. There is a quick turnaround between the matches and at the same time, according to Times of India, the Indian squad is expected to assemble on February 2 in Nagpur.

“Rohit, Jaiswal, and Iyer are all likely to attend the BCCI's Naman Annual Awards in Mumbai on February 1. Next day (February 2), they are supposed to report for a short camp to Nagpur before the three-match ODI series against England,” the source was quoted as saying in a report.

A comeback to forget for Rohit Sharma

Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma’s comeback to domestic red-ball cricket wasn’t memorable. He scored 31 runs across two innings even as a star-studded Mumbai side lost to Jammu and Kashmir by five wickets. The loss has turned out to be a huge setback for the Ajinkya Rahane-led side as they are now in a must-win situation against Meghalaya.

Moreover, they would also have to hope for other results to go their way to make it to the knockouts of the Ranji Trophy season. Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) is yet to announce the squad for the upcoming game and it remains to be seen who will replace Rohit, Iyer, and Jaiswal in the line-up.
