The Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025–26 began on December 24, and the opening day turned out to be a run-fest, with a total of 22 centuries being scored across matches. All eyes were on veteran batters Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who were in action for Mumbai and Delhi, respectively.
Despite scoring runs in recent ODI series, both in Australia and India, uncertainty still looms over the ODI future of the two senior cricketers, especially with the 2027 ODI World Cup in focus. As a result, they were reportedly asked to feature in this domestic tournament to remain in the selection radar, given that both currently play only the ODI format in international cricket. The duo, however, marked their return for their respective states with outstanding centuries.
Mumbai were set a target of 237 runs, and Rohit Sharma single-handedly guided the chase with a monstrous knock of 155 runs off just 94 balls. He was also named the Player of the Match for his effort.
In Delhi’s clash against Andhra Pradesh, Kohli’s side was tasked with chasing a challenging target of 299 runs. Delhi completed the chase in style, winning by four wickets with 74 balls to spare, courtesy of a special knock from Virat Kohli. The former India captain scored 131 runs off 101 balls. During this innings, Kohli also went past the 16,000-run mark in List A cricket, becoming only the second Indian batter to achieve the feat after the legendary Sachin Tendulkar.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi smashed 190 (84) for Bihar
Apart from the veterans, several youngsters also lit up the opening day with exceptional performances. Bihar registered a record-breaking outing as they posted a massive 574/6 against Arunachal Pradesh. Fourteen-year-old batting sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi continued his remarkable year, smashing 190 runs off just 84 balls, including 16 fours and 15 sixes.
Another high-scoring contest witnessed by fans was the match between Jharkhand and Karnataka. Batting first, Jharkhand piled up 412/9, with skipper Ishan Kishan stealing the spotlight. Batting at number six, Kishan smashed 125 runs off just 39 balls at a staggering strike rate of 320.51.
Despite the onslaught, Karnataka successfully pulled off the massive chase, thanks to a brilliant century by Devdutt Padikkal. Opening the innings, Padikkal scored 147 runs off 118 balls as Karnataka completed the chase with five wickets and 15 balls to spare. Padikkal was named the Player of the Match for his match-winning knock.
