The auction for Season 4 of the SA20 is complete, with all franchises strengthening their squads ahead of the tournament. The spotlight, however, was firmly on South African youngster Dewald Brevis, who emerged as the costliest buy in league history.

The Pretoria Capitals secured Brevis for a record fee of R16.5 million. He recently impressed in the T20I series against Australia, where he became the highest individual scorer in a T20I for South Africa. In the first three editions of the SA20, Brevis turned out for MI Cape Town, scoring 676 runs in 29 innings and also picking up four wickets.

The second-most expensive player at the auction was Aiden Markram, bought by Durban’s Super Giants for R14 million. Markram, who previously played for Sunrisers Eastern Cape, enjoyed remarkable success as captain, leading them to back-to-back titles in 2022 and 2023. Over three seasons, he has scored 967 runs in 34 innings and taken 17 wickets in 24 innings. His leadership and all-round ability are expected to be crucial for the Super Giants.

The third-highest bid went to all-rounder Wiaan Mulder, who was picked up by Joburg Super Kings for R9 million. Mulder, who previously played for Durban’s Super Giants, has contributed 546 runs in 25 innings and claimed nine wickets across the last three seasons. Interestingly, his former franchise, looking for a replacement, brought in another Protea all-rounder.

That replacement came in the form of Gerald Coetzee, signed by Durban’s Super Giants for R7.4 million. Known for his pace, death bowling, and powerful hitting, Coetzee has taken 19 wickets in just 10 innings for Joburg Super Kings in the past three years.

The fifth costliest buy was left-arm pacer Nandre Burger, who was retained by Joburg Super Kings for R6.3 million. Burger missed last season due to a lower back stress fracture, but will continue with the franchise. Across his SA20 career, he has picked up 13 wickets in 15 innings.
