In a thrilling Twenty20 International match on Monday in Glasgow, the Netherlands defeated Nepal in three extra overs, a first in men's professional cricket history. After 20 overs, the match ended in a tie, necessitating a super over, which is uncommon in cricket otherwise. A second super over, which is much less common, was then played after even the super over was knotted. Incredibly, a T20I match proceeded to a third super over, where the game was finally decided, for the first time.
The Netherlands overcame Nepal in an exciting encounter on Monday at Glasgow's Titwood Ground, making history as the first men's limited-overs match to include up to three Super Overs. The Dutch side appeared to be in a strong position in the contest after scoring 152/7 in the 20 overs they were given. To put pressure on Nepal, Ben Fletcher and Kyle Klein took early wickets. However, Kushal Bhurtel (34) and captain Paudel (48) helped the Rohit Paudel-led team mount a formidable comeback.
Scotland T20 Tri-Series Highlights:
As part of a tri-series encounter that also featured Scotland, the Netherlands batted first and scored 152/7. They appeared likely to win, but tailender Nandan Yadav's two boundaries in the last over sent the game into a super over. The squad was able to stay in the game thanks to Daniel Doram's four-over session, which saw him take three wickets and concede just 14 runs. Rupesh Singh and Paudel pursued the chase until the twentieth over, needing 56 runs from the last five overs. Tailender Nandan Yadav hit Klein for 15 runs to tie the match and start the first Super Over with 16 needed in the last over.
Super Over 1:
Bhurtel hammered him for two sixes and a four, adding 19 runs, as Nepal batted first. Michael Levitt of the Netherlands started with a six off the first ball, but Max O'Dowd completed the job with a six and a boundary off the final two balls to tie the score and force a second Super Over, even though it appeared sufficient to defend the 20-run mark.
Super Over 2:
The Netherlands batted first this time and scored 17 runs. Another challenging aim was posted by O'Dowd and captain Scott Edwards. However, Dipendra Singh Airee followed with a four after Nepal's captain Rohit Paudel began with a massive six. The game went to a third and historic Super Over when Airee smashed Klein's for another six with seven needed off the final ball.
Super Over 3:
Zach Lion-Cachet took the ball for the Dutch and performed an outstanding over in the third Super Over, which ultimately saw a clear winner. Rupesh Singh and Paudel were both removed by him without giving up a run. Levitt ended the exciting match by smashing Sandeep Lamichhane's opening ball for a six with one run still to win.
