Should Gautam Gambhir be sacked as India's head coach? Sourav Ganguly opens up

Sourav Ganguly dismissed rumors of Gautam Gambhir's sacking, stating: "There's no question of removing Gautam Gambhir at this stage." He argued that India's focus must shift to playing on better, more balanced pitches and backing the current Gambhir-Gill leadership combination, not resorting to knee-jerk reactions after one loss.

Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly has stated that the Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir shouldn’t be sacked at this point, adding that the team should get together and work harder to win the games in the longest format of the game on home tracks.

Speaking exclusively to India Today, Ganguly reckoned that India has an impressive bowling line-up that can take 20 wickets in Tests, citing the instance of the Oval and Edgbaston Tests against England in the Anderson Tednulkar Trophy.

“No, no, there’s no question of sacking out of Gautam Gambhir at this stage, but I think as a team, they need to get together and say to themselves that we will work hard to win Test matches because on flat pitches, it’s a lot harder because the opposition will pad, there’ll be big runs scored on the first innings of each team. And in India, surprisingly, you’ll see how the game changes quickly on day four, day five," Ganguly told India Today.

“So they have to be patient on that. As I said, they have the bowling attack to get 20 wickets as you saw at the Oval on the last day, as you saw in Edgbaston during that series (vs England), so they can do that as well. Swing comes into play in India with the ball getting old. So it’s just a mindset change," he added.

After the retirement of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma ahead of the England tour, the BCCI appointed Shubman Gill as the Test captain, and he propelled the Indian team to a 2-2 series draw in the five-match Test series. Ganguly went on to heap praise on Gill and Gambhir for the same.

“And you know, Gautam as a coach and Shubman as a captain did exceptionally well in England on good batting pitches. And I firmly believe that they can do well in India as well," he concluded.
