Indian ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer is likely to be available for the upcoming South Africa ODI series at home, scheduled to take place from Sunday, November 30. However, he will be out of cricketing action for at least three weeks after sustaining a left rib injury.
Shifting our focus to the details of the incident, it happened during the 34th over of the Australian innings in the Sydney ODI as Iyer completed an outstanding catch to dismiss the keeper-batter Alex Carey.
Carey, who tried to hit the ball down the ground, got a top edge that was caught impressively by Iyer between backward point and deep third man. However, during the process of completion of the catch, he had hit the ground hard, injuring his left rib. He was eventually taken off the field.
"Shreyas was taken to the hospital for scans during the match itself. As per the initial diagnosis, there has been a jerk, and he will have to be out of action for a minimum of three weeks. He will have to report to the Centre of Excellence on his return. Further reports are awaited before one can conclude if he will require more time for recovery. If it is a hairline fracture, then it might take longer. It is too early to say. If it is three weeks before RTP (Return To Play), then there is a chance that it could be touch-and-go before November 30 (start date of the ODIs against South Africa)," stated the source, as quoted by India Today.
With Iyer already taking a six-month break from red-ball cricket, he will not be participating in the ongoing Ranji Trophy 2025-26 campaign for Mumbai. He will have at least four weeks of rest before he gets to play the South Africa home series.
