Indian middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer ended as the runner-up yet again after his Mumbai T20 League team, Mumbai Falcons, were defeated by Mumbai South Central Maratha Royals in the grand finale of the tournament on Thursday, June 12, at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
Notably, a few days ago, Iyer’s IPL 2025 franchise, Punjab Kings, ended as the runners-up after losing to the Royal Challengers Bengaluru by six runs in the grand final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Tuesday, June 2.
Delving into the details of the Mumbai T20 League 2025 Final, Mumbai Falcons batted first and could post a mediocre 157/4 in 20 overs. Mayuresh Tandel (50*) and Harsh Aghav (45*) were the star batters. Vaibhav Mali scalped two wickets for the Royals. Captain Shreyas Iyer could score only 12 runs in 17 balls.
In response, Chinmay Sutar (53) and Awair Naushad (38) propelled the Royals to a five-wicket win with four balls left. Kartik Mishra and Yash Dicholkar scalped two wickets apiece. After the game, Falcons’ skipper Iyer said that he didn't want to single anyone out for the defeat as that's 'backstabbing'.
"Don't want to pinpoint any particular incident. Overall, the boys were brilliant with their efforts. We lost just one game en route to the final. Just a one-off game where you can't single out anyone - it's basically backstabbing, and I don't enjoy that. We've learnt a lot,” Shreyas Iyer said after the game.
"It's pretty common to feel dejected after a final loss. It must hurt them. But when they come back next year, they'll have that extra motivation and confidence. They should be proud of their effort," he added.
Former Indian Test captain Rohit Sharma, who marked his presence at the venue for the final, gave the runners-up cheque and medal to Iyer.
