Former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh has heaped praise on the Indian Test captain Shubman Gill, who broke a lot of world records with his exceptional batting display in the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.
In an exclusive interaction with India Today, Yuvraj stated that Ajit Agarkar, the chief selector, and Gautam Gambhir, the Indian team head coach, deserve a lot of credit for the Indian captain’s impressive performances in the ongoing England tour.
"I think both his batting and captaincy are impressive. He's really taken on the responsibility. Test captaincy is a tough job, and the kind of performance he has given as a Test captain - that's exactly what being a Test captain means. He's been the best performer in the team, and he has proven it through his leadership,” Yuvraj Singh told India Today.
“I'm sure Gautam Gambhir and Ajit Agarkar also deserve credit for building this team and entrusting him with that responsibility. And I think going forward, I hope India wins this Test series," he added.
Interestingly, Gill is already leading the run-scoring charts in the ongoing five-match Test series, smacking 585 runs from four innings to bridge the gap ahead of England’s Harry Brook, who is the second leading run-scorer with 356 runs.
While Gill started the first innings of the Leeds Test with a 147-run knock, he smacked his career-best score of 269 in the first innings of the Birmingham Test to stamp authority. Additionally, he went on to score 161 runs in the second innings of the second Test, levelling the series 1-1.
With an aggregate of 430 runs in the second Test, Gill emerged as the second-best batter to score the most runs in a Test, staying just behind the former England batter Graham Gooch, who scored 456 runs.
