Shubman Gill needs Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma: Suresh Raina

Former Indian top-order batter and cricketing analyst Suresh Raina has opened up on the Indian veteran duo Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in ODI cricket, stating that young players like Shubman Gill need assistance from the duo.

Raina also asserted that India currently doesn’t have a proper opening batter and No.3 batter in this particular format. Also, India would be hoping to find a perfect replacement for the chase master, Virat Kohli, who has an exceptional record in ODI chases.

“India doesn’t have dependable players at No. 1 and No. 3 (in ODIs) at the moment, especially when chasing,” Raina told Telecom Asia Sport.

“Rohit and Virat’s experience is very important. It’s crucial for the seniors to stay involved with the juniors. Shubman (Gill) has done really well, but he needs players like Virat and Rohit,” he added.

Raina also opened up on the veteran duo’s Champions Trophy performances. Moreover, he stressed Kohli’s performances in the recently concluded IPL 2025 season, which RCB won after defeating Punjab Kings. Notably, Rohit won the player of the match award in the ICC CT 2025 Final vs New Zealand.

“They have won the Champions Trophy, they have won the World Cups. Virat won the last IPL also. For the astute leadership they have shown during their respective careers, they need to be part of the dressing room,” Raina stated.

Notably, Virat and Rohit will next play for India in the ODI series against Australia Down Under in October this year. Also, India is scheduled to play the ODI series against South Africa at home in November.

However, according to reports, both Kohli and Rohit might be asked to play the Vijay Hazare Trophy to stay in contention for the Indian team selection for the Australian tour and the home series against South Africa.
