Shubman Gill is reportedly down with a fever. However, according to a recent report in RevSportz, he is keen to play in the upcoming Duleep Trophy despite his illness. Gill has been named captain of the North Zone, who will play against the East Zone in a play-off match on August 28.
The report also suggested that Team India’s new Test captain wants to set a good example by playing in the Duleep Trophy as one of the core members of India’s leadership group. Earlier this year, the BCCI clearly stated that unless there is a serious injury, every player, including seniors, must feature in domestic tournaments. It seems Gill is determined to follow that directive.
Not only for the Duleep Trophy, Gill has also been named in Team India’s 15-member squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025. He was announced as the vice-captain of the side, which surprised many fans and cricket experts since this marks his comeback to the T20I setup after more than a year.
Recently, Gill was appointed as India’s new Test captain after Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from the longest format just before the England tour. All eyes were on him during the five-Test series in England.
Under his leadership, a relatively young Indian squad managed to secure a 2-2 draw. Gill led from the front by scoring 754 runs in 10 innings, including four centuries. He finished as the highest run-scorer of the series and was named India’s Player of the Series.
As captain of his IPL franchise, Gujarat Titans (GT), Gill also guided the team to the playoffs in IPL 2025. Now, the opportunity to lead North Zone in the upcoming Duleep Trophy is another chance for him to sharpen his leadership skills. However, his participation will depend on clearance from the BCCI’s medical team regarding his fitness.
Meanwhile, several reports have sparked speculation that the board might be grooming Gill as India’s new all-format captain going forward. His quick elevation—first as Test captain, and now as vice-captain in the T20I squad—indicates the selectors’ trust in him as the future leader of Indian cricket.
