Shubman Gill’s innings reminded me of the previous Indian No.4, almost a carbon copy of that genius: Jonathan Trott

Former England batter and analyst Jonathan Trott has heaped praise on the Indian Test captain Shubman Gill for his heroics with the willow in the ongoing Birmingham Test against England, as India is aiming to level the series 1-1.

Notably, Gill started off the Birmingham Test with a 269-run knock, his career-best score in the longest format of the game. Later, he followed it up with a 161-run score in the second innings to amass a total of 430 runs as an aggregate.

Speaking on JioHotstar, Trott stated that Gill’s twin centuries have reminded him of former Indian No.4 batter Virat Kohli. Furthermore, he added that Gill would have liked a win in Leeds, but he would be aiming for a comfortable win in Birmingham.

“I honestly feel privileged to be here and witness that innings. I can’t recall him giving the English bowlers even a single chance. The way he shifted gears, hitting sixes at will, without slogging, just pure cricket shots, was something special,” Jonathan Trott said on JioHotstar’s ‘Match Centre Live’

“Today, he showed how complete a batter he is. It reminded me of the previous Indian number four, almost a carbon copy of that genius. I don’t think he could’ve dreamed of a better start to his first two Tests on this tour. Sure, he’d have liked to win at Headingley, but now he’s hopefully set up a fantastic victory here,” he added.

After declaring the second innings at 427/6 in 83 overs, India reached a historic milestone by accumulating a total of 1000 runs in a single Test for the first time in the team’s cricketing history, surpassing their best of 916 set against Australia at the SCG in Sydney in 2004.
