Indian opening batter Smriti Mandhana has blamed herself for the reason behind India’s four-run narrow defeat to England Women in the 20th match of the ongoing ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 campaign on Sunday, October 19.

Speaking at the press conference, Mandhana asserted that batters should’ve done better in terms of shot selections. When six runs were needed per over, Mandhana went for a big shot, resulting in loss of her wicket at the crucial time.

“We could have done better with our shot selections. Especially, it started from me so I will take it on me that the shot selection should have been better. We just needed 6 per over. Maybe we should have taken the game deeper. So yeah I mean I’ll take it from myself because the collapse started from me,” Smriti Mandhana told the media.

“For sure I thought I could take her on. I was trying to aim more over covers. I mistimed that shot. Maybe the shot wasn’t needed at that time. I just needed to be more patient because throughout the innings I was trying to tell myself to be patient and not to play aerial shots. But maybe the emotions took over for that one, which never helps in cricket. So yeah, I mean, but walking back for sure, I mean, I was pretty confident that we’ll be able to get the win, but I mean, it’s cricket, you can’t ever think too ahead,” she added.

Moving into the details of the game, England Women posted 288/8 in 50 overs. Heather Knight was the top scorer, amassing 109 runs in 91 balls with 15 fours and one six. Deepti Sharma was the star bowler for India, pocketing a four-wicket haul.

In the chase, Smriti Mandhana (88), Harmanpreet Kaur (70), and Deepti Sharma (50) played crucial knocks in the second innings. However, the lower middle-order batters failed to live up to expectations as they collapsed from 234/3 in 41.1 overs to 262/6. Eventually, they suffered a four-run defeat.
