Stephen Fleming hails CSK opener Ayush Mhatre

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) head coach Stephen Fleming has heaped praise on the opening batter Ayush Mhatre, who smacked 94 runs off 48 balls against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Saturday, May 3.

Notably, Ayush is only 17 years old, and he has made his IPL debut this season for the Super Kings. His stylish bat swing and strokes have already caught the attention of the team’s head coach.

Speaking about the top-order batter, Fleming stated that Ayush has got a brilliant hand-eye coordination along with a beautiful bat swing, which makes him a modern-day T20 batter. Moreover, he is also impressed with the young batter stepping up on the big stage.

"He's got talent. He's got hand-eye coordination. He's got a beautiful, silky swing. He's aggressive. Everything that we like about a modern-day T20 player," Fleming said at the post-match press conference.

"But, to me, it's the temperament and being able to execute in a trial and then on the big stage. That's what I'm most impressed with. It's one thing to have a lot of shots, but to be able to execute that game plan on a big stage in front of some of the biggest players in the world is what I admire," he added.

It’s important to note that Ayush Mhatre joined the CSK set-up after the skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad got ruled out of the competition after five games due to an elbow injury. In his debut game against MI, he smacked 32 runs off 15 balls. Later, he scored 30 runs off 19 balls against SRH.

"It's sometimes hard to explain, but there's just a quality around what he was doing. It's early days, but we have been very impressed with his skills right from when he trialled and was with us at the early part of the season," he concluded.
