“Virat Kohli is not a player who gives up” - Sunil Gavaskar on Virat Kohli’s ‘raising gloves’ gesture

Cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar dismisses swirling rumors of Virat Kohli's retirement, interpreting Kohli's 'raising gloves' gesture in Adelaide as a simple acknowledgment of the crowd, not a farewell. Gavaskar firmly states that "Virat Kohli is not a player who gives up" and backs him to bounce back.

Former Indian opening batter Sunil Gavaskar has shared his views on the Indian veteran No.3 batter Virat Kohli’s gesture of raising his gloves after his second consecutive duck against Australia Down Under at the Adelaide Oval on Thursday, October 23.

Speaking exclusively on Sports Tak, Gavaskar made it clear that Kohli was acknowledging the fans in the members’ enclosure, which has cricketers who played first-class cricket and Test cricket. Moreover, he also assured the fans of Kohli’s participation in the SCG ODI on Saturday, October 25.

It’s important to note that Kohli made his international comeback for the first time since the conclusion of the ICC Champions Trophy. However, he retired from the longest format of the game ahead of the England tour. Also, he had already retired from the shortest format of the game earlier in June 2024 after winning the T20 World Cup.

"No, no, no. Don't read too much into that gesture. The ovation he got when he came to bat was great. There were Indian supporters as well as Australian supporters who gave him such a great ovation. Especially the Australian fans gave him such an ovation, and he acknowledged them. Because from where the players come out, there's a members' enclosure. Members mean the people who have played first-class cricket, Test cricket. So he gave them that acknowledgement. Don't read too much into it," Gavaskar told Sports Tak.

"He'll surely play in Sydney. Kohli is not a player who gives up. Do you think he'll go out after scoring 0,0? No way. He'll go out on a high. There was no signal. After Sydney, it'll be the ODIs vs South Africa at home. There are many more ODIs. I'll say that 2027 is the target for Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma," he added.
