Former Indian opener and commentator Sunil Gavaskar has stated that the Indian team was under pressure against Pakistan in their Super Four clash of the ongoing Asia Cup 2025 campaign on Sunday, September 21, in Dubai.
Speaking exclusively to India Today, Gavaskar has asserted that after what had happened in the group stage clash, India entered the Super Four clash under extreme pressure. Notably, the handshake row caught the limelight after the India vs Pakistan group stage encounter.
Moreover, Gavaskar pointed out that India, under pressure, dropped a few chances. While Abhishek Sharma dropped a catch at the third man to give a life to Sahibzada Farhan, Kuldeep Yadav dropped a dolly with Saim Ayub receiving a life.
Later in the eighth over, Abhishek dropped another catch off Farhan off Varun Chakravarthy. In the 19th over, Shubman Gill dropped an easy chance off Faheem Ashraf. However, Gavaskar backed the Indian fielders despite their dropped chances.
“I think, after all the hullabaloo that happened after the last game, the pressure was definitely on the Indians. Maybe it showed on the field, as they dropped relatively simple catches. Of course, there were some difficult ones, but the standard we see today makes even tough chances look simple," Gavaskar said to India Today.
"Yes, the pressure was on India to win this game in style, especially given everything that happened last Sunday. In this way, they showed they have the temperament to handle all that and deliver under pressure,” he added.
India will next lock horns with Bangladesh on Wednesday, September 24, before taking on Sri Lanka on Friday, September 26, in the ongoing Super Four round.
