Suryakumar Yadav clears fitness test at BCCI CoE ahead of India squad selection for Asia Cup 2025

India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav has passed the fitness test at the BCCI Center of Excellence (CoE) ahead of the BCCI selection committee’s announcement of the Men in Blue T20I squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025 tournament. Suryakumar Yadav is the captain of the Indian team in T20Is.

The daringly innovative batter, who won the Most Valuable Player award, last played in the Indian Premier League. With 717 runs during his incredible IPL season, the 34-year-old became just the second batter after Sachin Tendulkar to score 600 or more runs for the Mumbai Indians in a single season.

He helped lead MI to the playoffs, where they defeated Gujarat in the Eliminator before losing to Punjab Kings in Qualifier 2, where he ended behind Gujarat Titans Orange Cap winner Sai Sudharsan (759 runs).

He then turned out for Triumph Knights Mumbai North East in the T20 Mumbai League, scoring 122 runs in five innings.

Suryakumar Yadav regains full fitness after hernia surgery; he is completely fit for the Asia Cup 2025

After playing in the T20 Mumbai League, Suryakumar Yadav had to undergo surgery for a sports hernia in the lower-right abdomen in Munich, Germany, in June. It's unclear if the hernia discomfort got worse throughout this stage. In 2023, Suryakumar underwent surgery for both a sports hernia and an ankle.

"Fitness tests are mandatory before Return to Play (RTP) post-surgery. Surya has cleared the fitness test," a BCCI source told PTI.

Suryakumar Yadav is now scheduled to attend the BCCI selection committee meeting in Mumbai on Tuesday after passing the fitness test. The Asia Cup will take place in the United Arab Emirates from September 9 to September 28. India will play their opening match against the hosts on September 10 and their main match against bitter rivals Pakistan on September 14, both in Dubai.
